Art That Feeds People: JDK and Conscious Alliance Team Up With the Mile High Music Festival to Benefit the Hungry

Conscious Alliance, a nonprofit living the tagline “art that feeds,” teamed up with the Mile High Music Festival and JDK to promote the 2010 Mile High Food Drive, a benefit for the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Each of the entrances to this year’s Mile High Music Festival grounds, outside Denver, Colorado, will accept food donations in exchange for poster vouchers.

THE PATAGONIA DRIFTER IS NAMED "GEAR OF THE YEAR" BY OUTSIDE MAGAZINE

JDK was thrilled when Outside magazine recently named the Patagonia Drifter day-hiker "Gear of the Year" for its versatility and comfort. JDK color and material designers have collaborated with Patagonia since the inception of their footwear line, four years ago. With the Drifter, Patagonia wanted a low-top hiking shoe sporty enough for day hikes, but supportive enough for light backpacking.

FASHION-FORWARD LOCALS: FUTURECLAW MAGAZINE AND JDK JOIN FORCES

JDK recently collaborated with FutureClaw, a Vermont- and New York City-based, large-format fashion, art, music, and culture publication. For the fourth and most ambitious issue of FutureClaw, JDK contributed art direction, design, and story ideas. The issue included a profile of friend-of-JDK, Shelly Vorhees, an emerging artist gaining attention for her collection of ethereal portraits. FutureClaw is published quarterly.

Revolution and Design: JDK Creates Visual Language for the Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect

When Microsoft decided to make gaming more creative and less constrained, they looked to JDK to create visual language for Kinect, a "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience." Based on an accessory for the Xbox 360 console, Kinect enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 through an interface using only gestures and spoken commands.

RACE DAY

Tessa Vande Griek, Director of Production Services; Nate Herzog, Information Services Director; and Liz Adams, Director of Finance, ran in the 22nd annual Vermont City Marathon, held May 30, 2010. Plenty of friends and coworkers and complete strangers cheered them on as they made their way through the streets of Burlington. All were amazed by the feeling of camaraderie during the race itself. Nate and Tessa commented on the amount of work they did to prepare.

OFF THE STREETS AND IN THE GYM

Videographer Bruce Gibbs—a former JDK employee and ongoing creative collaborator—recently explored the intersection of sport and life in a short film on amateur boxing, "I never saw a live fight before filming this," Gibbs explained of his introduction to the sport. "At this level it's much more than boxing. For some it's taken them from the streets, jail, self-destruction, and given them a family that happens to punch each other in the face. And then hug." JDK's Michael Jager urged Gibbs to experience the grit of a nearby Golden Gloves gym and helped align access to the experience.

JDK PRODUCES LIMITED-EDITION PRINTS TO BENEFIT THE VERMONT MOZART FESTIVAL

"What sound is to a composer, typography is to a designer," said David Covell, Creative Director in JDK's New York studio, describing the three limited-edition prints he recently completed to celebrate the 2010 Vermont Mozart Festival. The 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin's birth will act as a balance point for the festival, with performances of Chopin's solo piano works as well as his rarely performed piano concertos, which Covell highlighted in one of his prints.

JDK AND PATAGONIA PUSH PROGRESS

When Patagonia took up Backpacker magazine's zero-impact challenge, JDK was on board in a big way. Backpacker asked the companies to reduce the environmental impact of their products to the smallest possible margins, to create a shoe that had a smaller carbon footprint. Patagonia, true to their DNA as a sustainably built company, reacted with the P26 ("P" for Patagonia, "26" for the number of bones in the human foot and the average square inches that one human foot comes in contact with the earth's surface).
